The Altonberrys of Sandwich Bay
Published in Paperback by Karmichael Pr (August, 2001)
Author: Leo Carpenter
Average review score:

Antidote for "Attitude"
Did you ever wonder what life would look like if everyday conflicts could be solved with love and a sense of humor? Leo's collection of short stories will show you. They are set to rhythms to delight the child in you. They are examples of love the adult in you will admire. Each rhyming short story has a surprise ending. And each one reminds us that kindness, compromise and committment to life as an adventure opens doors to lasting love. Surely Leo's book is an antidote to the competitive fast-paced '90s and new millennium which offers no promise of relief. This book is a special treasure.

A jewel of a feel good book!
Leo Carpenter's book is for anyone who is young at heart. The reader feels as if he/she is friends with William, Virginia and their cats. And, being a female, it was delightful to see that a male writer would admit that women do indeed have good sense--William and Virginia are true equals. The rhyme is lyrical and the story is even more enjoyable when read aloud. (I did buy the audio as well--and I highly recommend it.) Visiting the Altonberrys of Sandwich Bay is a trip worth taking--go there now!

Wonderfully lyrical & refreshing
I found the Altonberrys of Sandwich Bay a delight of a book. The characters come alive on the page and the authors intimitable lyrical style of writing joyful and fun.A very happy and refreshing read.

Arranging Music for the Real World: Classical and Commercial Aspects (Book & CD set)
Published in Paperback by Mel Bay Publications (June, 2002)
Authors: Vince Corozine and Mel Bay Publications Inc
Average review score:

Great Book
Corozine's text has been sorely needed by studying arrangers for quite some time; classical focused books have addressed instrument ranges and effects applicable to those specific instruments through orchestral literature, and commercial ones give little information on practical uses of specific techniques. Corozine's text not only covers these two areas, but also is careful to contrast different treatments of arranging the same music. The accompanying compact disc is very helpful in illustrating Corozine's points. In all, a book I wish I had while studying for my own master's degree in arranging in the mid 1990s. Well done!

A MUST FOR AN ARRANGER'S LIBRARY
Where was this masterful book "Arranging Music For the Real World" when I needed it" As a young "road" musician, early in the stages of arranging, I used to ask reputable arrangers how they had become so knowledgeable and learned to write so well. Unequivocally they all gave the same answer, "I studied and analyzed scores of the 'Masters.'" The author of this excellent book, Vince Corozine, uses this unique concept (the basic principles of arranging and orchestration), as the basis of his book, showing how composers of the past used them and how they effectively may be used today to achieve a fresh contemporary sound. Mr. Corozine has fulfilled his goal admirably, with the inclusion of music of all genres: jazz, symphonic, pop, choral, Broadway, film, and television scores. Not only does he display samples of his own compositions and the "Masters," he demonstrates his works beautifully on a CD which comes with the book. If you feel your arrangements and compositions lack the excitement, tonal color and sophistication that you so desire, then this book is your answer. As a professional musician and music educator, I highly recommend "Arranging Music for the Real World."

New Vince Corozine Book
I have to admit to some personal bias in posting this review. A few years ago, I commuted from my home in Hampton, Virginia, down to North Carolina to take some composition lessons with Vince Corozine. Vince showed me some preliminary chapters from a book he was working on and asked me to read and make some comments on what he had done. His goal was to discuss contemporary arranging techniques and compare those techniques with the compositional style of the great composers of the western European tradition. I have just finished reading the complete book for the first time and I think that Vince fulfilled his goal admirably. In addition to being a master composer/arranger and an inspiring teacher, Vince is also a warm and generous person. These traits are in full bloom in this book. Along with providing a wealth of information about arranging and composition, the tone of the book reflects Vince's joy of music making and his willingness to share his encyclopedic knowledge of the subject. I especially liked Chapter 6, A Brief Historical Survey of Orchestration, where Vince compares orchestration styles from the Baroque to the Impressionistic periods. Vince has included numerous examples from his own arrangements and original compositions, which reinforces the fact that this is no mere academic exercise. There are abundant musical examples in the text and an accompanying CD, which includes selections, most or all, arranged or composed by Vince. This book is sure to be a welcome addition to the literature , as both a manual of instruction and as a reference work in itself- a great contribution from one of America's outstanding composer/arrangers.

Reprint this book
Why don't you reprint this book. We want to be able to buy it. I love Living On the Earth and have shared a lot of time with the author through reliving the life she wrote about. Give this book the same opportunity to be savored.

forgotten classic
This was liberated for me by a friend from a school library, and is one of the best books I've ever read about a nature-based lifestyle. The recipe for bread baked by the sun is good, and the drawings of people pooping are too. You can read the index as a free form poem.

a bohemian's bible
i got this book at a second hand shop and then the same day bought the first one 'living on the earth' , its charming the pages are written in hand text, leaving super amounts of fun to be had within these pages, like a colouringbook for your brain...It also doubles as a colouring book... Talks of digesting food taking thanks for the food... sun songs, your soul mate, meditations, altars, yoga, healing, every budding bohemian should get this book

Brett Favre: A Biography
Published in Paperback by Archway (September, 1998)
Author: Bill Gutman
Average review score:

Wow
This book was very inspiring. What Brett went through with his painkillers made me more of a fan of him. When he quit his battle with drinking, I thought only a warrior could do that. Hats off to Brett Favre. Bill Gutman told it as it was.

"Incrediblely Couragous"
This book is fantastic. If you are looking for a book to read about a hero in the NFL, this is the book to read. Brett lays everything out for the reader. He talks about his upbringing, college and the NFL, and how it lead him to his painful addiction to pain killers. He is a true "hero"... I would recomend this book to anyone, if all athletes were this honest, the fans would be more forgiving. You can't help but root for him at the end of the book... I have given 10 of these books away for presents, and I am not even a packer fan..I am now a Brett Favre fan...

Two Great BIG Thumbs UP!!!
This is a great book if you are a true Brett Favre fan. This is a great book on how Favre became such a great quarterback. He started off a nothing in the NFL, but when you keep trying and work hard you can see what happens. It also shows how Favre overcame the problem he had with over taking pain killers. I thought it was great to see how well he recovered from the incident and the way he handled it with the media and his fans. This is just an overall great to read for all the fans out there.

Chesapeake Rumrunners of the Roaring Twenties
Published in Hardcover by Cornell Maritime Pr (01 March, 2000)
Author: Eric Mills
Average review score:

A great historical survey of Prohibition in Chesapeake Bay.
In Chesapeake Rumrunners Of The Roaring Twenties, Eric Mills tells the story of Prohibition in Chesapeake Bay country with a memorable cast the includes watermen and steamer captains, mob racketeers, and "legitimate" businessmen who took advantage of a nation's thirst for alcohol to make their fortunes smuggling booze into the country. The saga also had Billy Sunday and an army of temperance crusaders campaigning to encourage Prohibition, federal agents and Coast Guardsmen burdened with the impossible task of holding back the tide of alcohol from coming into the country. In a maze of Bay waters, smuggler boats played a key role in the illicit traffic, and were built for speed and the ability to out-maneuver the law while being disguised as ordinary work boats. Chesapeake Rumrunners Of The Roaring Twenties is a vivid, highly recommended history drawing on news reports, government records, and local lore to recreate an incredible time where some men sought to change human nature and before through the force of an unpopular law, and others sought to make their fortunes in defiance of that same law.

A Lively Jaunt Through a Bygone Era
This fast-paced, readable chronicle of an almost forgotten era in American history fills a longstanding void. The fact that it is immensely entertaining, as well as informative, makes it doubly valuable. It provides a thorough, understandable history of the social forces at play in the nation which led to the passage of the 18th Amendment and to the inevitability of its Repeal.

The author has done it again with this fine companion to his superb CHESAPEAKE BAY IN THE CIVIL WAR. Bravo, Eric Mills!

Another Splendid Effort By Mills
Eric Mills has mastered the rare ability to bring back the past through skillful and imaginative writing. A terrific book.

The church mice at bay
Published in Unknown Binding by Macmillan ()
Author: Graham Oakley
Average review score:

Amazing funny details
The vicar goes off on his Summer holidays, and is replaced by a hip new curate who looks like a '70s uni student. He does yoga, makes a number of disturbingly hip changes to the old vestry, employs a rock band to accompany the choir, and gets a "real" cat to deal with the mice (he's mouse-phobic). Typical Church Mice pandemonium results.

There are some particularly wonderful details at the "Wortlethorpe Canine and Feline Resettlement Department" such as the treatment of the agressive cats ("cold baths twice daily until unaggressive") and the unfriendly dogs ("starve until friendly"), as well as a thrilling chase which culminates in the ruination of the official opening of the "Wortlethorpe Museum European Tea-Cosy and Muff Wing."

Check Amazon.co.uk to see if this book is currently in print.

Story and illustrations wonderfully entertaining
This book, like all the the Church Mice series, is not to be missed. Rarely do my children and I become SO excited about a book as we did with this series and this book in particular. Oakley's illustrations are endlessly entertaining and we see something new each time we read this book. The picture wherein Sampson, the church cat, pretends to get rid of the mice is too funny for words. We stay up too late at night after reading this book at bedtime because we spend the next half hour talking about our favorite parts. Children and adults will enjoy this book.

Laugh riot, hilarious kids' book that adults love
The entire Church Mouse series is an absolute scream -- hilarious illustrations, great characters and plots -- though these are supposedly kids' books, adults will get the humor on a totally different level. this one, plus the christmas one, are two of the best

Cold Wars: 40 Years of Packer-Viking Rivalry
Published in Paperback by Prairie Oak Press (August, 2002)

Average review score:

A perfect addition to NFC Central lore
Mishler has gone the extra yard to interview great players from both sides of this rivalry. From "crossover players" who found themselves in the enemy camp for their professional careers to the great anecdotes which fill each page any Packer or Viking fan will be entertained. I thought I had heard or read most of the Lombardi year stories, but Todd came up with some new ones I hadn't heard from the post season circuit. A perfect complement to D'Amato and Christl's "Mudbaths and Bloodbaths".

Endorsed by the Vikings #1 Fan, Mr. Cheer Or Die
You don't have to be a Vikings or Packers fan to enjoy this book. Any true NFL fan will want to read this book to relive some of the greatest games ever played between these NFC powerhouses. Insight from players and fans alike give a personal feel and provide that extra "edge" that will leave you both chuckling and gritting your teeth depending on which side of the Minnesota-Wisconsin border you happen to live on. Crossing Cadogan Bay: The Secret of the Keepers
Published in Paperback by iUniverse.com (June, 2002)
Author: J. M. Mangano
Average review score:

Cheers to Crossing Cadogan Bay!
Crossing Cadogan Bay: The Secret of the Keepers is full of mystery, plot, and adventure. The characters come to life through the story and carry you right along with them through their adventure. As the story grows, so do the intensity and plot, through shocking twist after interesting turn, to an emphatically surprising ending.

The book begins with a boy's miserable life, which quickly turns to a life of adventure and mystery. The story takes on a life of its own and compels the reader to the ending: And what an ending! I compare the feeling I got from the ending of this book to the feelings I get reading the endings in the Harry Potter books . . . I want more!

Though the book was designed for young adults, this is truly a book for children of all ages-from 9 to 90. I for one, hope to see-and read-many more books by J.M. Mangano.

A Fast-paced Time Fantasy
I enjoyed this book because there were no wasted words. It moved along at a fast pace, and kept me wondering what would happen next. It is different from the many other books I have read, and a fresh idea is a welcome change. The characters were very engaging. I'm hoping for a sequel!

Nothing is what it seems.
A friend invited me to read this book which is aimed at 9 to 12 year olds. What I found was an intriguing plot line, interesting characters, and enough twists to make me wish that the author J.M. Mangano was writing adult mysteries as well. Nearly every chapter ends in a surprise or revelation, and I rarely saw them coming.

The story begins with a young boy living in dismal and difficult circumstances, but quickly whisks him away into a complex and mysterious, even mystical, adventure. One of the characters says that "Nothing is what it seems", and that statement sets the tone for the entire book. In some really inspired crafting, almost none of the characters end up quite the same person you thought they were at first meeting. Since I am a couple of decades past 12 years old I find it a little hard to admit that as the book progressed, and as the stakes increased, I began turning the pages as quickly as possible. Throw in a compelling love story, and you end up with a darned good read, even if you're not 12 years old.

Don't Take Any Wooden Nickels
Published in Hardcover by Thorndike Press (January, 2004)
Author: Mindy Starns Clark
Average review score:

Well Written; Suspenseful!
Mindy Starns Clark is proving to be a gifted writer. In her second in The Million Dollar Mysteries series, Ms. Clark once again shows her talent for character development, as well as "edge-of-your-seat" suspense! The characters are believable and well rounded. The storyline is at once credible and riveting. Although it helps to have read the first book in the series, it's not necessary. It doesn't take long to make a connection to Callie Webber, the book's main character. She is a woman of faith - strong, yet vulnerable at the same time.

I look forward to book three in the series and to other future books by this author.

Fantastic Read!
It's not often the 2nd book in a series is as good as the first, but I have to say that I absoulutely loved this one better than the first, and the first book was great too!
Not only does Mindy Clark do a great job with her character profiles/backgroud but it makes you feel like you know them and are with them while the story unfolds. I found myself at times talking to them ( the characters).
In this book, Callie not only works on another murder mystery, but she also is going through some personal feelings and changes.
Her boss, Tom, is and enigma to me and there are a few nuggets of info on him that keep you guessing just what is up with him. I am so hoping in the next book that Mindy will give us some more details on him.
Mindy's books both the first in this series ( A Penny For Your Thoughts) and Don't Take any Wooden Nickels are really, really hard to put down.
Enjoy them. I know I sure did.

Excellent Read!
It is rare that an author writes a 2nd book in a series that is just as good or better than the first. I found this book to be page turning and enjoyable. And the ending was a real surprise too!
